Tennessee Credit Unions Go to D.C.

What a week! Hike the Hill 2025 was another fantastic opportunity for Tennessee’s credit unions to showcase their mission to federal lawmakers and to advocate for expanding the options box in order to better serve their members.

It was also an opportunity to unwind and network with fellow advocates from Kentucky, Ohio and Wisconsin throughout the week. We’re grateful for our out-of-state friends to remind us that we’re not alone in our efforts to preserve and strengthen the credit union movement for all Americans.

We focused our advocacy efforts predominantly on modernization. A goal is to increase the currency transaction report threshold from $10,000-$30,000, to $50,000-$100,000, the threshold in which a loan must be considered a member business loan, and to extend loan maturity limits beyond 15 years for agricultural, business and student loans to provide more flexibility and options for members.

In addition, we made asks to preserve CDFI funding levels while supporting smart reforms to the fund, to invest in a whole of government task force to study and suggest solutions to protect consumers from payment scams and to enhance safety and soundness of credit unions by giving them the ability to access more liquidity in cases of emergency.

During the week, attendees also stopped by Credit Union House as they began demolition on the transformative modernization renovation. Nestled in historic Capitol Hill neighborhood, Credit Union House is a place where credit union history is preserved and the credit union movement is celebrated.

Hike the Hill is always a wonderful event! We’re thankful for the advocates who joined us this September and look forward to another great event next year.

In the meantime, information on the 2026 Governmental Affairs Conference is out now. Make sure to join us March 1-5 in Washington D.C.!
