#ILoveMyCreditUnion Day Feature
Nearly 20 years ago, I had just started in the Corporate Communications Department at McKee Foods in Collegedale, Tenn. The family-owned bakery is the maker of Little Debbie® snacks and Sunbelt® snacks.
During the new employee orientation, information was shared about the company credit union. I soon opened a share account to start saving for a puppy and all the supplies needed for puppy ownership—fence, dog house, crate, bedding, vet bills, etc.
By fall, I had a little nest egg. While reading the classified ads during lunch on a Friday, I spotted an ad for Labrador puppies. That evening, we drove out to the country to look at them. Upon arriving, all the puppies bounced over to greet us. But there was something special about the roly-poly chocolate lab who stayed with us long after his brothers and sisters went back to playing
We named him Mason. He shared early adulthood with us, and I joke that he was a catalyst for starting a family because he used to run down the street to houses where kids were out playing.
When we brought our daughter home from the hospital, he excitedly wagged his tail to greet her. He was her protector and constant playmate. She loved putting necklaces and accessories on him. She sometimes would fall asleep while lying beside him, and he remained so still until she woke up from her nap.
We had 15 wonderful years with our hairy barker.
Mason’s birthday was actually on July 31. So, in honor of #ILoveMyCreditUnion Day, I share how my love of credit unions began at what was then McKee Credit Union.
Credit unions are more than financial institutions. Credit unions power life experiences.
