May isn’t just the unofficial kickoff to summer—it’s National Military Appreciation Month, a time set aside across the U.S. to recognize the service and sacrifice of active-duty troops, veterans and military families. Established by Congress in 1999, the month runs from May 1–31 and includes observances like Memorial Day, Armed Forces Day and Military Spouse Appreciation Day.
