Scenic Community Credit Union (SCCU) donated $4,000 of interchange – the revenue the credit union earns when members use their debit card – to the Chattanooga Area Food Bank during the month of November. In light of the rising cost of living, SCCU is helping Chattanooga locals put food on the table this holiday season.
According to the Chattanooga Area Food Bank, one in six households in Southeast Tennessee and Northwest Georgia do not know where their next meal is coming from. Within this, 49,058 children in the Food Bank’s 20-county service area face hunger.
This initiative, Every Purchase For a Purpose, allowed SCCU members to help relieve hunger in their community by swiping their debit card. By the end of the month, The Credit Union was able to donate $4,000 worth of proceeds to the Chattanooga Area Food Bank.
This came at no extra work for their members. Because of this initiative, about 10,000 meals will be given to those suffering from food scarcity in the Chattanooga area this holiday season.
“People helping people is the heart of the credit union difference and this time of year can be really difficult,” said Jourdan Reyes, director of marketing and communications with SCCU. “Families having to make the tough decisions of purchasing food or gifts under the tree is something we want to assist with. The idea behind Every Purchase for a Purpose was an easy way for our members to join in to support our community with just a swipe on their everyday transactions. When we see an opportunity to provide financial peace of mind we jump in!”
