The votes have been cast, tallied and the people of the 7th Congressional District have spoken. Representative-elect Matt Van Epps defeated State Rep. Aftyn Behn Tuesday night to win a special election to serve the remainder of former Congressman Mark Green’s term. Van Epps won 53.9% of the vote with 96,988 ballots cast compared to Behn’s 45% and 81,044 votes.
For a district that President Donald Trump won by 22% (and Mark Green in 2024 by 21%), this represents a 13% swing towards the Democrats in a race that became quite nationalized in the final week. Tuesday’s election represented the highest voter turnout percentage, compared to the 2024 elections, of any special election in the country in 2025. Once absentee ballots are counted in the coming week, it is expected that turnout for this special election will end up surpassing the 2022 midterms.

Van Epps is expected to be sworn in later this week.
