Association Inducts Five Into the Mississippi Credit Union Hall of Fame

The Association inducted five credit union leaders into the Mississippi Credit Union Hall of Fame during the Mississippi Annual Convention in Biloxi, Miss.

Established in 1994, the Mississippi Credit Union Hall of Fame recognizes and honors individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the credit union movement in Mississippi. Since its inception, this prestigious program has inducted more than 100 distinguished leaders—each celebrated for their dedication, leadership and lasting impact on the credit union industry throughout the state.

Mary Powers, Brightview Credit Union

Mary Powers began her service to Brightview Credit Union in Tupelo, Miss., in 1981 with her appointment to the Education Committee. Her leadership and dedication quickly became evident as she was named chair of the Education Committee in 1987, elected to the Board in 1989, and later chosen as board secretary. In 1996, she became chair of the Board.

“She is the cornerstone of the credit union,” said Jimmy Giles, fellow board member. “Through good times and bad, she has been the steady leader. She has been present for 45 years, always working to assist members, staff and the board. I don’t know the personal drive that has kept her involved, but I’m not sure we would exist today without her. I am deeply appreciative of her willingness to help and guide anyone who seeks her assistance. This is a great and well-deserved honor for her.”

From the moment she joined the committee, Mary began attending Board meetings, and over the past 45 years, she has missed very few meetings. Her unwavering presence and leadership have helped guide the credit union through periods of growth, change and challenge.

Even today, Mary remains actively involved, working closely with Sheila Bridges, CEO, to oversee and help guide decisions related to the construction of the credit union’s new building.

Oscar Pope, Members Exchange Federal Credit Union (In Memoriam)

Oscar Pope began his credit union volunteer service in 1992 and faithfully served on the Members Exchange Federal Credit Union Board of Directors for 33 years, demonstrating unwavering dedication to the credit union movement and to the members we serve.

Mr. Pope’s family accepts the Hall of Fame Award in his memory.

Throughout his tenure, he helped guide the credit union through significant growth and change, including the expansion to three major locations and the adoption of improved services and delivery channels—all with a clear focus on strengthening member service and long-term institutional success. Oscar approached his role as a board member with seriousness, integrity and vision. He consistently advocated for decisions that benefited both members and employees, while ensuring the credit union was positioned for a strong and sustainable future. His leadership, wisdom and steady presence left a lasting imprint on our organization.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Oscar was deeply committed to his community and faith. He served as Chairman of the Board for Terry Mission Baptist Church and had been a Deacon since 1979. His community involvement included participation in the Hinds County PTA, the Hinds County Project PTA, the Oscar R. Pope Scholarship Fund, and the Hinds County Building Fund—reflecting a lifelong commitment to service, education and community development.

Oscar passed away in December 2025, but his legacy of leadership, service and devotion to the credit union philosophy continues to inspire those who had the privilege of working with him.

“His contributions exemplify the values celebrated by the MSCUA Hall of Fame, and it would be a fitting and meaningful honor to recognize his extraordinary impact,” said Misty Munn, senior vice president with Members Exchange Federal Credit Union.

Believing wholeheartedly in the philosophy of “People Helping People,” he has consistently advocated for the best interests of members and the communities the credit union serves.

His dedication extended beyond the walls of the credit union as well. Kenneth’s support and advocacy were instrumental in the passage of H.R. 1151, legislation that helped protect consumers’ freedom to choose their financial institution and strengthened the future of credit unions nationwide.

Throughout his decades of service, Kenneth has earned tremendous respect for his deep understanding of credit union governance, board leadership and supervisory committee responsibilities. He has always remained focused on the true purpose of credit unions—serving members with integrity, fairness and personal care.
