As of midnight on Wednesday, Oct. 1, the United States federal government is shut down. At this point in time, we do not see an opening coming soon and would recommend that you prepare for this to continue as long as the winter 2018-2019 shutdown, which ultimately lasted for 35 days.
We know that, for your federally employed members, shutdowns are an extremely stressful time and that credit unions continually go above and beyond for them. If you have stories or examples of what you’re doing to serve your members during this shut down, let us know! And don’t be afraid to let the public know, either; this can be a good opportunity for earned local media.
People Helping People
In the past, credit unions have gone above and beyond to serve members affected by a federal government shutdown. We know many of you are already beginning to prepare if an agreement is not reached.
Here are resources to help as we navigate this federal funding halt.
- Visit America’s Credit Unions’ Resource Center for government shutdown assistance.
- Read the Implications of a Government Shutdown for Credit Unions and Their Members Document.
- Complete the survey to share your credit union’s plan to help members during the government shutdown.
Advocate for Continuity in Funding
We, along with our partners at America’s Credit Unions, will continue to advocate for continuity in funding to reduce long-term consequences and uncertainty. We will keep you updated with any new developments. As always, please contact the Tennessee Credit Union League if you have any questions.
