Global Women’s Leadership Network Launches First Tennessee Sister Society

In a resounding celebration of Women’s History Month, the Tennessee credit union community came together to launch the first Tennessee Sister Society, a new addition to the Global Women’s Leadership Network (GWLN) dedicated to supporting women in the industry.

With women at the helm of 63% of credit unions in the state, the event emphasized the commitment to furthering women’s equality and representation in leadership roles.

Months in the making, the intercontinental launch gathered over 70 attendees (virtually and in-person), showcasing the overwhelming support from the credit union community. The event not only marked the inception of the Tennessee Sister Society but also served as a platform to raise funds and awareness for Thistle Farms, a charitable organization aiding women surviving addiction, human trafficking and prostitution. Over $1,000 was donated during the event, demonstrating the community’s dedication to making a tangible difference in women’s lives.

The event featured Global Women’s Leadership Network (GWLN) director, Eleni Giakoumopolous, who shed light on GWLN and its mission to empower women worldwide. Among the highlights were inspiring stories shared by the GWLN Tennessee Sister Society volunteers.

A very moving story was shared by Jennifer, a Thistle Farms program graduate and survivor, and Janyl, who discussed the many ways Thistle Farms provides support to empower women in Tennessee and globally. The seamless alignment among the speakers, sponsors, and attendees was readily apparent.

Acknowledging the pivotal role of sponsors and partners, including Strategic Resource Management, Allied Solutions, CU Mortgage Association, PSCU/COOP, Equifax, Confluent Strategies, TruStage, SWBC and Cornerstone Financial Federal Credit Union, the event underscored the collective effort required to support women’s leadership initiatives. The Tennessee Sister Society’s launch received significant support from vendors, with generous contributions and giveaways enhancing the event’s impact. A very special thank you to the Tennessee Credit Union League for their support and partnership!

Looking ahead, the Tennessee Sister Society expressed its commitment to ongoing efforts in promoting women’s leadership within credit unions and industry partners. While the event marked a significant milestone, it was emphasized that the journey towards gender equality and empowerment is continuous, extending far beyond the confines of Women’s History Month.

As Tennessee’s credit union community embarks on this new chapter, the Tennessee Sister Society stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of collaboration and advocacy, driving positive change for women across the state and beyond.
